Instructions

Preparation

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the warm milk, granulated sugar, and instant yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  • In another bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract to the yeast mixture.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Baking

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) while the dough rises.
  • Roll out the dough on a floured surface into a rectangle about 1/4-inch thick. Spread melted butter over the surface.
  • Mix brown sugar and ground cinnamon in a small bowl and sprinkle it evenly over the rolled-out dough.
  • Roll the dough tightly and cut into 12 equal pieces. Place the rolls in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish.
  • Cover and let them rise for an additional 30 minutes.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.

Tres Leches Sauce

  • While the rolls bake, whisk together the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, and whole milk.
  • Once the rolls are done baking, pour the tres leches sauce over them, allowing them to soak for at least 30 minutes.
  • Optionally, dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

For richer flavor, add a pinch of nutmeg to the filling. Allow the rolls to soak in the sauce for as long as possible for the best texture. Store leftovers in an airtight container for 2 days, or freeze before soaking.
