Ingredients

For the Blackening Seasoning

  • 1 tablespoon paprika vibrant and aromatic, adding beautiful color
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper fiery and zesty, for a little kick
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder fragrant and savory, enhancing overall flavor
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder sweet and earthy, perfectly balancing the spices
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano herbaceous and aromatic
  • 1 teaspoon salt essential for bringing out natural flavors
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper sharp and pungent, rounding out the seasoning

For the Tacos

  • 1 pound white fish fillets (such as tilapia or snapper) succulent and flaky
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil rich and smooth
  • 8 small corn tortillas warm and pliable
  • 1 cup red cabbage, shredded crisp and colorful
  • 1 whole avocado, sliced creamy and buttery
  • 0.5 cup fresh cilantro, chopped bright and fresh
  • 1 whole lime, cut into wedges zesty and tangy
  • optional hot sauce for serving for those who crave extra heat

Instructions

Preparation of Seasoning

  • In a small bowl, combine the paprika, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, salt, and black pepper.

Preparing the Fish

  • Pat the white fish fillets dry with paper towels. Brush with olive oil, then sprinkle the blackening seasoning generously on both sides.
  • Preheat a large skillet over medium-high heat until hot.

Cooking the Fish

  • Carefully place the seasoned fish fillets into the skillet. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until the fish is blackened and reaches an internal temperature of 145°F.
  • Remove the fish from the skillet and let it rest for a minute before flaking into large pieces.

Assembling the Tacos

  • Heat the corn tortillas until warm and pliable.
  • Lay pieces of blackened fish on each warm tortilla. Top with shredded red cabbage, avocado slices, and fresh cilantro.
  • Squeeze fresh lime juice over the tacos and drizzle with hot sauce if desired.

Notes

For a healthier twist, try grilling the fish instead of searing. Substituting corn tortillas with lettuce wraps or using cauliflower tortillas offers low-carb options.
