For the Mac and Cheese Layer

  • 2 cups macaroni (uncooked) The classic pasta that adds comfort.
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese Rich and melty, providing indulgent cheesy flavor.
  • 4 cups milk (divided) Essential for a luscious cheese sauce.
  • 2 tbsp butter Adds richness to the cheese sauce.
  • 1.5 cups shredded cheddar cheese For the cheese sauce.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, diced onion, breadcrumbs, egg, and 2 cups of milk. Season with salt, pepper, and paprika to taste.
  • Mix everything well, then press the mixture into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish.

Cooking the Meatloaf

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, cook the macaroni according to package instructions, drain and set aside.

Making the Cheese Sauce

  • In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour to create a roux until smooth.
  • Slowly whisk in the remaining 2 cups of milk, stirring until thickened.
  • Stir in seasonings and 1.5 cups of shredded cheddar cheese until melted.

Combining and Final Baking

  • Combine the cooked macaroni with the cheese sauce, ensuring every piece is coated.
  • Pour the macaroni mixture over the baked meatloaf, spreading it evenly. Sprinkle the remaining cheddar cheese on top.
  • Return the dish to the oven and bake for an additional 25 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.

Notes

Use lean ground beef for less greasiness. Customize with veggies like spinach or bell peppers for added nutrition.
