  • 1/4 cup Water Helps dissolve sugar.
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt Enhances sweetness.
  • 1 cup Chopped Nuts Optional; adds crunch (e.g., pecans or almonds).

Preparation

  • Prepare your workspace by gathering all ingredients and tools, including a heavy-bottomed saucepan and a candy thermometer.
  • In the saucepan, mix the unsalted butter, granulated sugar, and water over medium heat. Stir continuously until all ingredients are well combined and the butter has melted.
  • Increase the heat to medium-high, stirring occasionally to prevent burning.
  • Use a candy thermometer to monitor the temperature, aiming for 300°F to 310°F (the hard crack stage).
  • Once the desired temperature is reached, remove from heat and stir in the salt.
  • If using nuts, fold them in quickly.
  • Line a baking dish with parchment paper, pour the hot toffee mixture onto it, and spread it evenly.
  • Allow to cool at room temperature for at least one hour until set.
  • Break into pieces and store in an airtight container.

Notes

For best results, use a heavy-bottomed pan and invest in a good candy thermometer. Keep stirring and watching closely during the cooking process.
