Preparation

  • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, diced onion, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently with your hands and shape into oval patties.

Cooking the Patties

  • Heat butter or oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for about 3-5 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through. Remove and keep warm.

Sautéing Vegetables

  • In the same skillet, add diced onion and sliced mushrooms. Sauté for 5-7 minutes until onions are translucent and mushrooms are tender.

Making the Gravy

  • Sprinkle flour over the sautéed vegetables, stirring well. Cook for 1 minute, then gradually whisk in beef broth and additional Worcestershire sauce until simmering and thickened.

Simmering the Patties in Gravy

  • Return the cooked patties to the skillet, nestling them in the gravy. Cover and simmer for 10-15 minutes.

Final Touches

  • Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper, and stir in sour cream if desired. Serve hot over mashed potatoes or your favorite side dishes.
