Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  • In a medium bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy, approximately 3-4 minutes.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Gradually add the dry mixture to the butter mixture alternately with the buttermilk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients.

Baking

  • Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and bake for 30-35 minutes until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  • Allow the cake to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Soaking

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, and whole milk until blended.
  • Once the cake has cooled, poke holes all over the top using a skewer or fork.
  • Pour the milk mixture over the cake, ensuring it seeps into the holes. Let it soak for at least one hour, preferably overnight.

Topping

  • In a mixing bowl, beat the heavy cream with powdered sugar until stiff peaks form.
  • Spread the whipped cream over the soaked cake. Optionally, garnish with chocolate shavings or a dusting of cocoa powder.
  • Chill the cake in the refrigerator for at least two hours before serving.

Notes

For optimal flavor, allow the cake to soak in the milk mixture overnight. Experiment with different toppings such as fresh berries or chocolate sauce.
